Traditional Himalayan Bone Mala

  |
  • This 108 bead mala is handmade in Nepal with water buffalo bone beads and traditional Tibetan spacer beads.
  • Bone beads allow us to reflect upon the Buddhist teachings of impermanence.  They serve as a reminder to live in the present moment; because nothing is permanent, everything is possible.
  • Each vintage style spacer bead is made of brass and inlaid with pieces of turquoise and coral.

In the Himalayas, it is typical for large animals such as yak or water buffalo to be used for service, food, clothing, and ritual items.  Given the limited amount of resources and the religious practices of the people in the region, it is important that none of the animal goes to waste.  These amazing bone beads are handcrafted by artisans who recycle and reuse everything in daily life and spiritual practice.

Mala measures approximately 30 inches around.  Bone beads are about 10-11mm, Tibetan beads are about 16mm.
