Himalayan Bone Mala

  |
  • Natural bone beads are a great way to reflect on the Buddhist teachings of impermanence in your daily practice.
  • This 108 mala from Kathmandu features natural yak bone that has been hand carved into beads with the ends lightly polished.
  • They serve as a reminder to live in the present moment; because nothing is permanent, everything is possible.

A note about bone beads:  In the Himalayas, it is typical for large animals such as yak or water buffalo to be used for service, food, clothing, and ritual items.  Given the limited amount of resources and the religious practices of the people in the region, it is important that none of the animal goes to waste.  These amazing bone beads are handcrafted by artisans who recycle and reuse everything in daily life and spiritual practice.

Size:

Approximately 27" around. Beads are about 13mm.

I Forgot these can be a little irritating to the skin. Lol. With being a natural/tradtionally made product thats to be expected though. Wear a shirt that covers your neck for these(to avoid the irritation) also wear darker colors because these can potentially discolor light color fabrics(I wear it with black). Also since it’s natural it will have a slight odor. This also is not a flaw of manufacture and is completely natural. I mainly use this for a travel mala and use it for outdoor meditation. Looks great over a black/dark shirt. I like the natural for the look and feel in the hand. Dharma shop offers two other versions of this style of bead which are hand dyed and that gets rid of most of the issues have with the traditional ones(. The irritation, scent). Still can dye clothing though. I dont own the monks version but i own the standard one and its a beautiful functional piece(highly recommended) great buy

Beautiful and 100% natural but...

The necklace is lovely but the odor is significant . I have tried hanging them in the sun to no avail. I am not going to return them due to the ridiculously low price. Hopefully them will smell less like decaying bone as they dry out. If not they will be laid to rest on an outdoor altar.

Hello, thanks so much for your feedback on your Himalayan Bone Mala! We're stoked you think it's beautiful and appreciate that it's all-natural, especially grabbing it in our warehouse sale! Since these malas were hanging out together in our warehouse for the sale, the fragrance may be more potent than usual. But the good news is, once it gets some fresh air and you start using it, that smell should fade away naturally. Think of it like airing out anything stored for a bit – the more it breathes, the better it gets! We really appreciate you keeping it even with the initial scent, and are confident that the smell will dissipate as you start using and enjoying it. Let us know if anything else pops up, and thanks again for supporting our Himalayan artisans!

Love the mala, but some beads are completely hollowed out.

There is no doubt about the authenticity. The quality is top notch. But there are about some beads which are completely hollowed out due to the rot in them, and this messes with the vibrations.

Hello Bhanu, thanks for your order and support! Creating a bead shape with natural materials like bone or even wood or seeds can be tricky, and artisans will always use/recycle all materials to ensure nothing goes to waste. As you noted, this further authenticates the beads themselves! It should not affect the use case of this mala and will continue to be a great reminder of impermanence in your practice. We understand that not every handmade item can always be a perfect fit, so if you would prefer to send this style back to us for a refund or exchange, we are happy to help further. Thanks again for your feedback and for choosing our small shop when selecting handicraft items. Namaste!
