Dark Tibetan Bone Mala

  |
  • Made in Nepal, this traditional mala necklace features 108 naturally stained dark water buffalo bone beads.
  • They serve as a reminder to live in the present moment; because nothing is permanent, everything is possible.
  • Because the beads are naturally stained, the color can begin to fade over time and with use.  We consider this special process to be a visual representation of the growth in your practice and a further reminder of impermanence.

Pair it with our matching Dark Tibetan Bone Wrist Mala Bracelet!

Many Buddhist practices revolve around impermanence.  We live only in the present moment and it is helpful to remember that nothing lasts.  Bone jewelry is featured prominently in Tibetan symbolism and many of our DharmaShop customers are fond of this reminder that nothing lasts forever.

A note about bone beads:  In the Himalayas, it is typical for large animals such as yak or water buffalo to be used for service, food, clothing, and ritual items.  Given the limited amount of resources and the religious practices of the people in the region, it is important that none of the animal goes to waste.  These amazing bone beads are handcrafted by artisans who recycle and reuse everything in daily life and spiritual practice.

Size:

Mala measures approximately 31" around with an adjustable knot. Beads are 8-9mm.

I like the look and feel of this mala

This mala is smooth to the touch. The adjustable knot makes it easy to wrap around my wrist and adjust for comfort when counting mantras.

I don’t think this mama is bone

I’ve had a lot of malas and specifically bone. This mala seems very polished and very light, too light to be bone. It has a machine made feel to it. Something’s not right. Wouldn’t order again.

Hello, Jay; thanks so much for your feedback. We understand your concern regarding the material of the mala and want to assure you that this mala is indeed made from 108 naturally stained dark water buffalo bone beads. Bone malas can vary significantly in appearance and feel. Some may appear more polished than others due to the natural variations in the bone and the crafting process. The weight can also fluctuate depending on the size and density of the individual beads. The darker finish is achieved through a natural staining process crafted by artisans in Nepal who are skilled in crafting traditional malas using ethically and sustainably sourced materials. We can assure you that these are genuine bone beads, and we hope you find this mala a valuable addition to your practice. If you find that this mala is not to your liking, never hesitate to contact us, and we will be happy to help with an exchange or refund. I hope this information is helpful! Thanks again for your review and for supporting mala artisans in Nepal.
