Mala beads, also known as japamalas, are beaded necklaces or bracelets that are used in prayer or meditation. They are traditionally made with 108 beads, plus one larger bead, called a guru bead, or a number divisible of 108. The number 108 is considered sacred in many religions, including Hinduism, Buddhism, and Sikhism. It is believed to represent the 108 Upanishads, the 108 names of the Buddha, or the 108 energy meridians in the body.
The history of mala beads is somewhat murky, but they are believed to have originated in India around the 8th century BCE. They were originally used by Hindu sadhus, or holy men, to help them focus their minds during meditation. Over time, the use of mala beads spread to other religions, including Buddhism.
Mala beads are typically made from a variety of materials, including wood, seeds, gemstones, and precious metals. The type of material used is often chosen based on its spiritual properties. For example, rudraksha seeds are believed to have protective and calming properties, while lotus seeds are believed to promote purity and compassion.
