Traditional Bone Impermanence Mala

  |

This handmade 108 bead mala features hand carved yak bone beads that are inlaid with pieces of turquoise, coral and brass on brown cord.  Each bead is unique!  It also features copal amber spacers with brass marker beads.  Bone beads allow us to reflect upon the Buddhist teachings of impermanence.  They serve as a reminder to live in the present moment; because nothing is permanent, everything is possible.

In the Himalayas, it is typical for large animals such as yak or water buffalo to be used for service, food, clothing, and ritual items.  Given the limited amount of resources and the religious practices of the people in the region, it is important that none of the animal goes to waste.  These amazing bone beads are handcrafted by artisans who recycle and reuse everything in daily life and spiritual practice.

Mala measures approximately 26 inches around.  Bone beads are about 9mm, copal amber beads are 10-11mm, brass beads are 14mm.  Made in Nepal.
